Services For Education is a unique charity that uses the power of learning and music to create and build confidence amongst children, young people, adults and communities. The main areas of focus are music provision, school support and private music lessons in and around Birmingham. Our Music Service works with over 470 schools to provide around 32,000 pupils with high quality music lessons alongside offering opportunities to participate in one of our 113 ensembles, bands and orchestras. Our School Support Service provides an extensive range of consultancy and training services for schools covering key areas such as safeguarding, healthy lifestyles, assessment/moderation and school improvement. THE ROLE

Desired experience/skills

We are seeking commercially minded professionals who can add tangible value with the willingness to influence, challenge and support senior decision makers during the next period of our Strategy.

SFE is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive community and welcome applications from all backgrounds. Prior experience does not need to have been gained from within the charitable sector, but a passion for seeing lives transformed through education and/or the arts is essential.

We would particularly welcome applications from individuals with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • An individual with Primary or Secondary school headship experience (ideally a current HT), or senior leadership within a Multi Academy Trust
  • A qualified accountant (to work alongside our current finance lead trustee, who is at the beginning of his third term in office)

If your experience is in a different area, but think we would benefit from your perspective, then please do apply.

Time Commitment

Successful candidates would be required to commit to regular attendance at virtual Board Meetings (usually 6 Monday evening meetings per year lasting up to 2 hours, dates circulated in advance) and occasional meetings with members of the Senior Leadership Team as appropriate.  Our governance structure includes three (virtual) sub committees two or three meetings per year, diarised in accordance with Trustees’ availability. We know that candidates will be considering how this opportunity fits alongside the demands of a busy day job and/or family life, and membership of a sub-committee is not essential.

Our intention in the future would be to introduce one ‘in person’ twilight session per year.

If you are new to trusteeship we would love you to consider starting that journey with Services For Education and we will tailor our induction programme accordingly.
