Whole Class Instrumental Teaching (WCIT)

£2,025.00

The Music Service started this innovative programme in 2004 in just 7 classes and has now expanded to 387 classes. The Government’s National Plan for Music Education has Whole Class Instrumental Teaching as a core requirement.

We now deliver this to more than 11,360 pupils every week with continuation rates of over 34% into year 5. Inclusion, progression and legacy remain core educational values of this delivery.

The programme, primarily intended to develop new opportunities for pupils to learn musical instruments, has demonstrated a much wider impact on all areas of pupils’ learning.

These sessions cost £2025 per year for new customers. If you are an existing WCIT customer, please contact [email protected]

Description

The programme is delivered, to all pupils in every Year 4 class, by a Music Service teacher working in close partnership with the class teacher for a session of about 45 minutes per class each week for the full year.

Each session will provide a variety of linked activities including singing and opportunities for composition and improvisation. Each child will be loaned an instrument which, after careful preparation and training, they will be able to take home for practice.

Instruments involved include: violin, cello, flute, clarinet, recorder, cornet, trumpet, tenor horn, baritone, trombone, guitar, ukulele, keyboard and world music/percussion – djembe, tabla and dhol.

As performance is a key element of the programme, opportunities to perform to the school and parents in assemblies are important.

Please note: Whole class instrumental teaching is offered to schools as a package, supporting musical progression and legacy. All schools sign up to the progression package over three years enabling ‘electives’ to continue learning into Year 5 and Year 6.

The costs of this programme are heavily subsidised for all Year 4 classes through the Music Grant.
