Protecting children and vulnerable people from harm is a fundamental provision for all schools and colleges across Birmingham.
Safeguarding must be established with official policies and procedures for all schools, childcare settings, colleges, clubs and other provisions that work with children and vulnerable adults.
The structure for safeguarding legislation and guidance is founded around six principles incorporated within the Care Act of 2014:
- Accountability
- Empowerment
- Partnership
- Prevention
- Proportionality
- Protection
Any institution or individual working with children must protect them from abuse, harm or neglect. It is the duty of all schools, colleges, academies and businesses to establish necessary safeguarding measures so that professionals can recognise:
- Mental, physical, emotional or sexual abuse
- Neglect, abandonment, malnourishment and poor hygiene
- Trafficking or exploitation
Organisations must also teach the National and Local guidance with the appropriate documentation regarding safeguarding and child protection.
Official guidance for safeguarding is available from the Department for Education (DFE) 2018 ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children’.
The NHS has provided a ‘Safeguarding’ mobile app to help make professionals, carers, and citizens aware of the latest safeguarding legislation and guidance.
Safeguarding in Birmingham is crucial as it enables schools to monitor children and vulnerable people who might be at risk of harm, neglect and abuse. Whether inside or outside the school, safeguarding supports children to realise their potential and continue their development safely.
With this training, teachers can educate children to avoid dangerous people outside the premises while securing the safety of the children inside by preventing any unwelcome individuals from entering.
Every child has a right to fulfil their potential, and all schools must do everything in their power to ensure the child has a safe education and secure pathway of development.
