The New 2026 Restrictive Intervention Guidance: What this Means for SEND Pupils

Thursday 12th Nov 2026

09:00 – 16:00

Venue: Online

£328.00

The new Restrictive Intervention Guidance came into force in April 2026 – and it has a raft of implications for practice in schools.

As well as ensuring best practice for all pupils, this course specifically focuses on our SEND pupils and what this means for them. Adding clarity to existing procedures will help all staff understand when and how reasonable force can be used on a child, as well as what constitutes best practice in this area. We know that some of our high-needs SEND pupils may behave in ways that make the use of restrictive interventions unavoidable for their safety and that of those around them, so this course will ensure that compliance with the guidance is embedded in your setting.

Description

In our busy roles in school, we don’t always have the time to thoroughly read and understand updates to statutory guidance.

This course has been carefully designed to ensure that you go away confident about what the updated restrictive interventions guidance means for your setting, able to update any policies or practices that may need adjusting, and educated to ensure the practice in your school is in line with the current guidance.

More importantly, you will be able to apply this learning directly to your more vulnerable SEND pupils to ensure that when a significant incident occurs, you are confident in your response – knowing that any use of reasonable force, seclusion or restraint is carried out within the guidelines of the Restrictive Intervention Guidance.

Key takeaways:

  • What are the key points from the new restrictive intervention guidance?
  • What does this guidance mean for our SEND pupils?
  • Does your Behaviour Policy align with the new guidance?
  • How do we ensure all staff are clear on what this guidance means in practice?
  • Are your systems and procedures in place for reporting incidents in a timely manner?
  • What impact will this have on school life?
