Feeling confident in our assessment of writing at the end of KS2 can be challenging at the best of times, and even more so in a special school or resource base where we can be working with a wide range of needs and achievement levels. In these circumstances, it is crucial that our teachers understand the difference between the PKS and the WTS writing expectations so that our assessments of writing are accurate, giving children the best chance of achieving their potential as they move on in their educational journey.
Join Birmingham’s Writing Moderation Manager, Emma Mudge, who will guide teachers through the standards and review what this looks like in practice to ensure that we are striving towards the best outcomes in writing that our pupils can achieve. This session will be followed by an opportunity to rigorously peer moderate your own pupils writing, alongside the support and input from Emma.
During this face-to-face training participants will:
– Deepen understanding of the requirements and expectations of pupils’ writing when assessing using the PKS or WTS statements
– Review examples of these standards and examine differences between the two
– Peer moderate their own pupils’ writing, referring to an expert for any clarification needed
This course is designed for teachers and senior leaders who wish to ensure that the assessment of the writing of their pupils with SEND is robust and has high expectations.

Emma Mudge - Adviser, Services For Education
Emma has more than 20 years' experience in primary education and has worked in a variety of roles, including Assistant Head Teacher, Deputy Head Teacher and Acting Head Teacher - working at the forefront of school leadership and improvement for the majority of her career.
Emma now works as an Educational Adviser, sharing her experience and knowledge to continually promote and improve the standard of teaching and learning in English, develop and extend the safeguarding culture within schools and to support leaders with their school improvement implementation overall.
Supporting schools with the accuracy of their writing assessments is an important part of her role, using her expertise as the moderation and monitoring manager to inform, train and support teachers and school leaders.
Emma is also part of the team which delivers the Health For Life programme (improving the healthy opportunities for primary aged children) and has delivered the NPQSL for 3 years, where she proudly supports the development of our aspiring leaders in the city.
